How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on BrighterRoom starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our electric toothbrush guides, that means the handle you want, the brush heads it takes and how you like to charge it.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the handle and the heads

An electric toothbrush is a rechargeable handle plus a brush head you replace. Oral-B and Sonicare handles each take their own heads, and a head often fits only certain handles.

We check the modes, timers, battery type and charger style the maker lists, plus the heads that fit each handle. When a handle limits your choice, we say which heads it takes.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at brush modes, built-in timers, pressure sensors, battery life, travel cases and what comes in the box. We stick to features and equipment.

We also note the warranty terms the maker lists. When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using an electric toothbrush. We look for patterns, like chargers that stop working, handles that won't turn on, short battery life, loose heads or loud motors.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one buyer may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Oral-B and Philips Sonicare sell many handles and head packs with similar names, so we check each model name and code before we write about it.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have brushed with every toothbrush we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For charging, resets and head changes, follow the maker's steps.

We give no dental or health advice, and we make no claims about teeth, gums or whitening. Ask your dentist about your own care, and when a maker makes a claim, we label it as the maker's claim.
